How to choose a computer monitor
You look at your monitor for hours a day, and the right choice makes a difference to eye comfort and productivity. Here are the key decisions, in order.
1. Size and resolution together
| Size | Matching resolution | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 24 inch | Full HD (1080p) | Fine for small desks and tight budgets |
| 27 inch | QHD (1440p) | A great balance for most people, for work and gaming |
| 27–32 inch | 4K | For design, video editing and very sharp text |
| 34 inch ultrawide | Ultrawide | Multiple windows and immersive gaming |
Low resolution on a large screen makes text look soft, so avoid a 27-inch 1080p monitor for text-heavy work.
2. Refresh rate (Hz)
- 60–75 Hz: enough for office work.
- 144 Hz and up: a clear difference in games and in overall smoothness. Make sure your graphics card supports it.
3. Panel type
- IPS: accurate colors and wide viewing angles; the most versatile for most uses.
- VA: higher contrast and deeper blacks, good for movies.
- OLED: stunning picture and infinite contrast at a higher price; read about the warranty and burn-in protection features.
4. Practical features
- USB-C with power delivery: one cable for laptop video and charging.
- Adjustable stand for height and tilt, or VESA support for a monitor arm.
- Low blue light and flicker-free for long sessions.
Qarin's take: for most people, a 27-inch QHD IPS monitor. For gamers, add 144 Hz or more. For designers, 4K with high color accuracy.
